In this article the writer invites us to consider the power of the Scriptures and introduces two new initiatives for busy Catholics who are looking to deepen their relationship with God. Fleur Dorrell is Scripture Development Co-ordinator at the Bible Society.

scripturesPope Francis advises reading the Bible on the bus. 'Everyone should carry a small Bible or pocket edition of the Gospels and should find at least a few minutes every day to read the word of God.' He has said this on many occasions. Verbum Domini, which is the most important document on the Scriptures since the Second Vatican Council shows how Tradition with emerging theological, scientific and technological advances enables us to understand the Bible and its central role in the life and mission of the Catholic Church. Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI, the author of this Apostolic Exhortation states:

I express my heartfelt hope for the flowering of a 'new season of greater love for Sacred Scriptures on the part of every member of the People of God, so that their prayerful and faith-filled reading of the Bible will, with time, deepen their personal relationship with Jesus.'1
