Weekdays in October, November and December 2019

Tuesday 1 October
St Thérèse of the Child Jesus
Week 26 in Ordinary time
Zechariah 8.20–23
Psalm 86
Luke 9.51–56

The first section of Zechariah ends with the expansive vision of the goyim (Gentiles) from great cities and nations encouraging one another to go to Jerusalem. The Jews attract others to them – ten being a sign of perfection and from all languages. It is a massive proclamation of what the Jews are summoned to be for all the peoples (First Reading: Zech. 8.20–23). Luke is divided into two main sections, and today we begin the second half. Jesus leaves Galilee, ‘resolutely’ taking the road to Jerusalem. As always, the Lord is much kinder than his disciples about those who reject him. This is a constant example to the Christian community (Gospel: Lk 9.51–56). St Thérèse followed the way of Jesus, spiritually in the Carmel of Lisieux, taking the road to Jerusalem.
