On being the salt of the earth and the light of the world
On this feast of St David, the Gospel gives us two key images or metaphors for describing both the Christian life and the life of the Church. As Christians and ecclesial communities we are called to season and preserve our lives with faith in Jesus and in God. We are also called to shine the light on every dark area of human life. It was no wonder that the second African Synod which took place from 4?25 October 2009 took the theme: ?The Church in Africa at the Service of Reconciliation, Justice and Peace ? You are the salt of the earth ? You are the light of the world (Mt 5.13.14).? In the light of internecine tribal genocides, particularly in Rwanda and Burundi, this was considered a very apposite theme for the African Synod. The Instrumentum Laboris of the Synod made special mention of corrupt and inept political leadership, xenophobia, and people-trafficking, divisions within Episcopal conferences, tribalism, and break-down in family life, dysfunctional educational and health systems and civil wars.
