Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has shown a strong interest and commitment to Catholic Social Teaching since taking office at the beginning of 2013; much of this is reflected in his published work, particularly his book from 2016, Dethroning Mammon.1 From an Anglican Evangelical background, Archbishop Welby has always been clear about the influence Catholic Social Teaching has had on him. Last year he kindly gave a warm endorsement on promotional material of our new postgraduate programme in Catholic Social Teaching at St Mary’s University:

‘I am delighted that St Mary’s is introducing a brand new programme in the discipline. Offering advanced study of Catholic Social Teaching will be a blessing to our debates in the public square in the years to come, and I am glad that St Mary’s has seen and taken the opportunity to lead the way in this field.’
