David Sanders – Editor Priests & People 1991–2004

Anthony Towey, Editor of the Pastoral Review:
In spring we received news of the death of Fr David Sanders OP, a former editor of this journal under its previous title. David was a gifted scholar who managed to be astringent and witty in equal measure as he harnessed the best theological talents of his generation in the service of the journal. He was also a generous and encouraging editor, giving unknowns such as myself a publishing debut. It is an honour as editor to follow in his footsteps, and the Pastoral Review is pleased pay this small tribute to a great man.

Michael Phelan OBE, former Chair of the Tablet Publishing Company:
The Clergy Review was founded in 1931, when there were about 6,000 diocesan secular priests in the UK, and the journal then became their trade magazine, with a diocesan priest as its editor. It is owned by the Tablet Publishing Co Ltd (TPC) which also publishes an older sister publication, the international Catholic weekly of Church news and comment, the Tablet, which was founded in 1840 by English barrister, Frederick Lucas, who was a Quaker convert to Catholicism. Both the Tablet and the Clergy Review remain the oldest Catholic publications and leaders of their types of journals in the UK.

Two or three decades on, the reforms of the Second Vatican Council of 1962–65 led to the return of the permanent diaconate, use of the vernacular, an increase of lay ministry, and evidence of the start of a decline in ordained priestly ministry. The journal evolved its content to meet these changes and the editor altered the journal’s title to the more inclusive Priests & People.
