The priestly vocation of the four Latin Church Fathers

Patrick H. Daly

June 2018-June 2019 is the Year for Priests in the Archdiocese of Birmingham.  Inspired by the medieval pulpit of St Chad’s Cathedral, Birmingham, this article relates the vocation stories of the four Latin Church Fathers. Patrick H. Daly is parish priest of Caversham, in the Birmingham Archdiocese.

In June 2018 the Archdiocese of Birmingham launched a Year for Priests. Flagged up as a ‘year of thanksgiving, prayer and celebration’, it is intended to raise awareness across the diocese of the legacy left to the Church of today by the priests of yesterday, to highlight the ministry of those diocesan priests engaged in the various ministries of the contemporary Church and to acknowledge their dependency on the support, understanding and prayers of the non-ordained. There is also the hope that the twelve months of reflection and intercession may help develop within the diocese a positive priestly profile which may inspire men, who are free to embrace the clerical state, to consider doing so and become priests.

Archbishop Bernard Longley’s hope
Archbishop Bernard Longley launched the Year for Priests at the close of a forty-eight hour gathering on priesthood, specifically tailored for the diocesan/secular clergy incardinated in the Birmingham diocese, at Woodland Grange, Leamington Spa, on 14 June 2018.
