What’s in a name? A reflection for Christmas on God’s name for his son

Sean Loone

As we prepare to celebrate the birth of God’s son at Christmas, what can we learn from a reflection on the name of Jesus as the Nazarene and how can it help us on our journey of faith today? Sean Loone is a deacon in the Archdiocese of Birmingham and teaches deacons in formation at St Mary’s College, Oscott.

‘He will be called a Nazarene’ Matthew 2.23
I have for as long as I can remember studied the Bible. It has always been a part of my life and, as deacon I am called to be a servant of God’s Word. There is one question that has always fascinated me, ‘Is it possible to get into the mind of the writers of the Gospels and to really understand what motivated them to write in the way that they did?’

To answer this question our starting point must always be with God because as Catholic Christians we believe that Scripture is nothing less than his inspired word. This means that the Gospel writers were, in themselves, inspired by the Holy Spirit when they wrote what they did.
