Year of Consecrated Life 2015 St John Bosco and Salesian spirituality

David O?Malley SDB

A present day Salesian traces the history of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), which started with a heart-centred approach to educating vulnerable youths in St John Bosco?s native Turin. David O?Malley SDB is based at Thornleigh Salesian House, Bolton.

Compared with many religious orders the Salesian congregation might be seen as a relatively new and perhaps reluctant arrival in the story of consecrated life. It is just 200 years since the birth of the founder St John Bosco (often known as Don Bosco) and the congregation still feels very close to its founder. The Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), together with the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA), have far less history than most monastic and mendicant orders and in some senses are still unpacking the charism of their founders for the first time.
