One of the most fascinating features of Paul VI?s 1968 Encyclical Letter Humanae Vitae (Of Human Life), On The Regulation of Birth, is the wide spectrum of emotions that it evokes. I was born in 1973 and so I had no first-hand response to this encyclical letter, but whenever I have spoken with older colleagues or friends on this topic, many have fallen silent, some have muttered with pained disapproval, and occasionally one or two have turned crimson and released their Kraken-like wrath.
