Hope

At the beginning of a new calendar year, many will wonder what the new year may bring, and hope that it will bring happiness. In common parlance the word 'hope' can easily express some vague wish rooted simply in the desire of the subject 'I hope the weather clears up and then I can mow the lawn.' The Oxford Dictionary of English (2nd ed. 2005) gives a definition of hope as: 'Feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen.' That is the vague wish rooted in human desire. Christian hope is something very different, primarily because it is not rooted in the subject - the person hoping, but in the object hoped for - God. If we wish to explore that idea, and indeed the very nature and reality of Christian hope, we can find it is expressed paradigmatically in the scriptures.
