The Pastoral Review Bursaries
in Catholic Theology / Applied Theology



General

1. The bursaries are open to men and women, irrespective of age who are UK nationals or who have lived in the UK for the last 5 years.
2. Someone who has begun a course of studies may apply for a bursary to cover the remaining fees.
3. Someone who is unsuccessful will not automatically be excluded from consideration if he or she applies in subsequent year.
4. Someone who receives a bursary for one degree will not automatically be excluded from consideration for a bursary for a subsequent degree (e.g. PhD after MA).
5. The bursary will normally cover the fees (up to £4000 pa) for a postgraduate degree course at a higher educational institution in the United Kingdom plus a subscription to The Pastoral Review for the duration of the course.
6. The applicant must submit a personal statement on why he or she should receive the bursary. The applicant must show that he or she would find it difficult or impossible to carry out their studies without a bursary, and that he or she has made other attempts to find funding.


For Research Programmes

7. The course must be a research degree, either MPhil or PhD.
8. The piece of research undertaken (i.e. the thesis or dissertation) must be theological in character.
9. The piece of research undertaken must be judged to be apt to make a contribution to the life of the Catholic Church in the United Kingdom and/or to the cause of justice and the common good of society.
10. The applicant must write 500 words outlining the focus and methodology of the research to be undertaken and explaining how this fulfils the criteria.


For Taught Post-Graduate Programmes

11. The programme must be a taught course at Master’s level, which includes a substantial research element in Catholic Theology/Applied Theology, (e.g. a dissertation).
12. The programme of study undertaken must be judged to be apt to make a contribution to the life of the Catholic Church in the United Kingdom and/or to the cause of justice and the common good of society.

Applications should include two referees who support the application. Recipients of any grant must be willing, at some point during the course of their studies, to share with other recipients the fruit of their studies.

Bursaries will be awarded in October and May of each year.
